How do you care for a linen tablecloth?

Already a favourite for bed linen, linen is making its way onto our dining tables, too. How should you care for your linen tablecloth on a day-to-day basis? From washing, drying, and ironing to stain removal—discover how to preserve your tablecloth's vibrant colour while enjoying its softness and exceptional durability.
- The initial wash
Before using the tablecloth for the first time, soak it for several hours in a basin of cold water mixed with 250ml of white vinegar. Afterward, you can machine wash it at 40°C using a gentle spin cycle. This step is highly recommended to fully set the colours in the fabric, soften it slightly, and prevent shrinkage.
- Everyday washing:
To properly care for your linen tablecloth, it is important to sort colours and avoid overloading the washing machine drum. You can then machine wash your linen tablecloth at temperatures between 40°C and 60°C.
Above all, do not use chlorine, bleach, or whitening agents. These chemicals can damage linen fibers. We also recommend avoiding fabric softeners, as linen is naturally soft. Ultimately, it is best to choose a gentle, natural detergent to preserve the qualities of this fabric, which boasts so many benefits.
If you choose to use a machine, you can also protect the coluor by occasionally adding a glass of white vinegar to the wash.
Drying and ironing a linen tablecloth
Once your linen tablecloth has been washed, you can choose whether to air-dry it or tumble-dry it (on a low heat setting). If you opt for the latter, make sure to unfold the tablecloth fully to ensure even drying. In either case, it will dry quickly and take on a lovely, naturally crinkled look.
Ironing is also optional. You are free to keep the linen’s slightly crinkled appearance or iron it for a smoother finish. If you choose to iron it, it is best to do so on the reverse side to avoid unwanted creases.
- Removing food stains
- Removing grease stains
- Removing other types of stains
Nothing beats a candle for dressing up a table, though wax can sometimes drip onto your tablecloth. If this happens, gently remove the wax with your fingernail. Then, place the tablecloth between two sheets of tissue paper (or blotting paper) and apply a warm iron for a few seconds. This allows the paper to absorb the remaining wax.
Finally, if you need to remove an ink stain, we recommend soaking the fabric in milk before gently applying white wine vinegar.
One last tip for caring for your linen tablecloth: feel free to wash it at the same time you put your linen napkins in the machine. This ensures your table linens maintain a uniform appearance.

To help you find the right size among the options available, we offer a detailed guide to help you choose your tablecloth
How do you choose the right tablecloth?
Ideally, the tablecloth should extend beyond the edges of the table. For the best look, allow for a drop of at least 30 cm on each side—meaning a total of 60 cm of extra width beyond your table's actual size.
Letting plenty of fabric hang down creates a draped, skirt-like effect. Conversely, a tablecloth that is too short might look undersized... It’s all about finding the right balance.
What size tablecloth for a rectangular table?
Rectangular tables have become a favourite in dining rooms in recent years. They are also practical: a rectangular table works just as well in the center of the room as it does in a corner. Pair it with a lovely linen tablecloth, and you have a winning combination!
- For a table seating 6 to 8 guests, choose a 175 x 250 cm tablecloth.
- For a table seating 8 to 10 guests, a 175 x 350 cm tablecloth is the perfect choice.
- For larger tables or those with unusual dimensions, consider a custom-made tablecloth by adding 60 to 100 cm to your table's length and width. This ensures the tablecloth is large enough to cover the entire surface while also creating an elegant drape.
What size tablecloth for a square table?
Ideal for square rooms, this type of table brings a lovely sense of symmetry to your space.
- For a square table seating 6 to 8 people, the ideal tablecloth measures between 175 and 190 cm on each side.
- For a small square table seating 4 guests, choose a 150 x 150 cm tablecloth.
- For a large square table seating 8 to 10 guests, opt for a tablecloth measuring 230 or 244 cm on each side.
Which tablecloth for a round table?
Inherently sociable, the round table ensures no one is left at the end or stuck in a corner. Why not break with convention? There is no rule stating you must choose a tablecloth that matches the shape of your table. In fact, a square tablecloth allows you to play with symmetry and add a contemporary touch to your interior décor.
- We offer a 175 x 175 cm tablecloth, ideal for round tables designed to seat 4 to 6 guests.
- For other sizes, you can order a custom-made tablecloth by adding 50 to 60 cm to your table's diameter, depending on the desired overhang.
What size tablecloth should you choose for an oval table?
A rectangular tablecloth is the ideal choice for an oval table. It lends a modern touch to your dining room as the corners drape elegantly toward the floor. If this shape seems unusual, remember that an extendable round table transforms into an oval one!
- For 6 to 8 guests, opt for a 175 x 250 cm tablecloth.
- For 10 to 12 guests, choose a 175 x 350 cm tablecloth.
- For smaller or larger tables, consider a custom-sized tablecloth, adding 100 cm to each side.
